Q. What is hyperlipidemia?

A. Increased cholesterol / lipid (fat) in the blood, total cholesterol level >200 mg/dL.

Q.  Why does its level increase in the blood?

A. Cholesterol is important for the human body. It helps us in the digestion of food and is important for the production of hormones in the body. So the human body makes cholesterol from the liver to keep the body healthy, our changing life starts taking cholesterol from outside and sedentary habits we are able to utilize even our own cholesterol which is produced in our body – creating the dual effect and increased cholesterol level in the body.

Q. What is the problem with the increased levels?

A. Everyone knows, Sudden cardiac arrest is the most common cause of death in all age groups including males and females across the world and also in India. If you talk about knowledge related to the prevention of cardiac arrest and how to provide cardiac arrest victims are <1% of the Indian population.

Modifiable

  1. Alcohol drinking
  2. Smoking
  3. Too much intake of red meat
  4. Obesity
  5. Sedentary lifestyle

Non-Modifiable

  1. Genetic
  2. Associated with hypothyroidism

Q. How we can control it?

A. Avoid risk factors and modify the quality of life.

  1. Seek from cardiologist if you are having non-modifiable risk factors
  2. avoid alcohol and red meat
  3. routine regular aerobic exercises
  4. quit smoking
  5. quit other drugs
  6. seeks at borderline dyslipidemia because a high level of hyperlipidemia is too late to act upon.

Q. Why Sudden cardiac arrest occurs?

A. Sudden cardiac arrest means a sudden stop in blood circulation to the heart, this happens due to the slow deposition of cholesterol in coronary arteries (vessels of the heart). Once plaque occupies the whole artery it stops blood circulation and leads to cardiac arrest.
